David The Lords Chosen One

THE Lord God said to Samuel: "How long will you mourn for Saul,seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go.
I will send you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I have chosen a king from among his sons."

Samuel did as the Lord told him and came to Bethlehem.
 The elders of the town trembled at his coming and said:
"Do you come peaceably?"
"Peaceably," he said, "I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.
 Make yourselves ready and come with me to the sacrifice."

He blessed Jesse and his sons and called them to the sacrifice.
When they came, he looked at Eliab and said: "Surely the Lord's chosen one is before him now."

But God answered, saying: "Do not look at his face or the height of him, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees. Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."

Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel; but Samuel said: "The Lord has not chosen this one either."
Then Jesse made Shammah pass by,
 and Samuel said: "Neither has the Lord chosen this one."
One after the other, Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel.
 And Samuel said to Jesse: "The Lord has not chosen these."
 Then he asked: "Are all your children here?"

And Jesse said: "There is still the youngest, David. He is keeping the sheep."
Samuel said to Jesse: "Send and fetch him here,
 for we will not sit down until he comes."
David was sent for, and soon appeared.
 He was a fine, healthy boy, and handsome.

Then God said to Samuel: "Arise, anoint him, for this is he."

Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David in the midst of his brothers.
 And the Spirit of the Lord was with David from that day on.

DAVID MEETS SAUL THE KING

And the spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit troubled him.

Then Saul's servants said to him: "You see, an evil spirit from God is sent to trouble you. Now if you will command your servants, who are here before you,
 to find a man who is a cunning player on the harp,
 then when the evil spirit comes from God, he will play upon the strings,
 and you will be well."

"Find me a man who can play well," said Saul to his servants, "and bring him to me."
Then one of the servants answered and said: "I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is clever at playing, an exceedingly courageous man,
 a man of war, prudent in all things, a handsome person and the Lord is with him."

Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse,
 and said: "Send me your son David, who is tending the sheep."
Jesse took an donkey loaded with food, and a bottle of wine, and a kid,
 and sent them by David his son to Saul.
And David came to Saul and stood before him, and served him.

Saul loved David very much and he was made the king's armour-bearer.

Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying:"Let David stay with me, for he pleases me very much."
And it was true that when the evil spirit from God came upon Saul,
 David took a harp and played upon the strings,
 and Saul was refreshed and felt well again.
The evil spirit departed from him at the sound of the music.
